Motorists who fail to strap their dogs in while driving could be breaking the law and invalidating their car insurance.

Drivers who fail to strap Fido in while driving could be lose their driving licences and invalidate their insurance.

The Highway Code says that motorists must make sure that "dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so that they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop too quickly".

It is recommended that drivers use any of the freely available pet retention systems available, such as seatbelt harnesses, crates or pet carriers.
