8 out of 10 drivers unaware of new speeding fine structure

The new speeding fines could see anybody earning £50k pay a fine of £1000 for travelling 41mph in a 20mph speed limit zone.

In a survey carried out by the Honest John, 84% of those surveyed said they had no idea what the new sentencing guidelines were – which are now in force (as of 24th April 2017) – meant, while more than half were completely oblivious that the potential fines for speeding were changing.

Under new laws specified by the Sentencing Council, the new rules mean that magistrates have the ability to fine motorists by up to 150% of their weekly take-home pay, while even small minor offences can lead to fines of up to 50% of a persons weekly income. There will be a cap of £1,000 per offence, (or £2,500 if it is committed on a motorway).
