Every family needs a safe, practical, efficient car to rely on for the school run, heading down to the shops, and the other essentials of daily life. But just because you need a family friendly car doesn't mean you can't have a fun car. Here are some cars that are both fast and convenient for family life.
This four-wheel-drive luxury family saloon has a 420hp V8 and can get from 0 to 60mph in an extremely impressive 4.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is 20 miles per gallon, which is quite thirsty compared to most but not too bad for a car with such a large engine. Used prices range from about £10-30k.
Vauxhall Insignia VXR Sports Tourer
The Insignia VXR is somewhat of a wolf in sheep's clothing. Looking very sensible and normal from the outside conceals the presence of a 320hp V6 that will get it from 0 to 60mph in under 6 seconds. Plus, the boot is huge. Used prices ranging from £15-£20k.
Jaguar XF Sportbrake
This car is no longer made by Jaguar, so it can be only be bought used. The supercharged engine delivers 423hp and a 0 to 60mph time of only 4.5 seconds. It's quite thirsty at 22mpg, and has one of the highest prices of the cars on this list: you're looking around £40k used.
BMW 335d Touring
This BMW comes with a huge 6 litre Diesel engine delivering just over 300hp and a 0 to 60mph time under 5 seconds. It's about as fast as a Porsche 911. Despite its speed, it delivers a very impressive 49mpg fuel consumption and is very spacious. Used price ranges from £10-30k.
The Porsche Panamera is one of the more seriously sporty models on this list. The hybrid version delivers an astounding 91mpg and still manages to get you from 0 to 60mph in 5.3 seconds thanks to the V6 engine. It's also the priciest model here, with a used price of around £60-90k.
Volkswagen Golf R Estate
While a VW Golf may not seen especially sporty, this model offers four-wheel-drive and nearly 300hp, giving you a 0 to 60mph time of 5 seconds. As hatchback cars go, this is one of the most renowned for user satisfaction. Used prices are around £30k.
Seat Leon Cupra 290 Tourer
This car comes in two power outputs with the highest being 276hp. The Spanish version was upped to 286hp. This model will get you from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds while still achieving a very decent 41mpg. Used prices £15-25k. The brightly coloured alloys are best avoided.
Skoda Octavia VRS Estate
The Octavia is very much an everyman's car, offering all round practicality. It's also better off road than some dedicated SUVs. Not the fastest on the list, it still manages 0 to 60mph in 7 seconds with its 227hp engine. Used price is generally around £15k.
